It is vital, especially during the first year of planting, to eliminate weeds completely and chemical weed control is therefore allowed. This can be done during the post-transplantation stage and after coppicing before the new suckers start. Herbicides can be spread along the rows or over the whole field. During the post-transplantation stage, the following active herbicide ingredients are allowed: oxadiazon, oxyfluorfen and pendimethalin.

Post-transplantation weed control needs to be done not more than one day after transplanting the cuttings. At the beginning of each new cycle, after cutting back the plants, and anyway before new suckers grow, glufosinate ammonium can be used.

If infestation by Convolvolus arvensis is detected, it must be allowed to develop parallel to the land for approximately 70 centimeters and then treated with a herbicide containing glifosate, using shielded bell sprayers to avoid spraying the crops. This treatment can be performed several times and in the meanwhile, harrowing between the rows should be suspended until the soil is completely dry.

The amounts and dosages of all active ingredients must be used according to the provisions of the ministerial registrations and as specified on the labels.
